Shark Trip - March 2002

Back

In March 2002, the boys and Dad decided to go on a shark diving trip.  We went down to Gisborne on the East Coast of New Zealand to head out to sea with a company called Surfit run by Boyd McGregor.  Dad drove down to Gisborne earlier in the week and the boys came down by themselves on the plane on Friday afternoon.

The boy's suitcase is packed ready to go.....

and the dive gear is all laid out ready to pack for the trip.

Tom and Johnny on the front porch getting ready to go.  They seem to be holding something up - we have no idea what it is.....

Two pictures of the boys at the departure gate at Auckland airport.
This is their first time alone on an airplane.

At the other end.  Here they come, being escorted from the plane at
Gisborne airport.

Nearly there.......

The first thing they wanted to do when we got to Gisborne is go to the beach.
This is JB and the picture was taken looking back toward the Port of Gisborne,
a log ship in the background.

Tom at the beach - this picture taken looking south.

Here's Dad at the beach.

Then we went down to a park in Gisborne.  Here's Tom checking out the ducks.

In the motel room on the first evening - we stayed at the TEAL Motor lodge.

Getting ready to head out the next morning, Johnny inspecting the shark cage at Surfit.

Again.

The boat on the trailer about to head off to the boat ramp.

The boat ramp at Tatapouri just north of Gisborne where we set out from.

Thomas getting into a little fishing action.

He caught a Dogfish - the closest thing we came
to a shark the whole trip.

We let the Dogfish go, here it is swimming away.

Tom and JB at it again.

Hard at it....

Hey!!!! A Blue Cod.

We decided that even if there weren't any sharks, we needed to get into
the cage, here's Dad and Tom testing it out.

Dad and JB in the cage, Dad's the one underwater.

We came back to Gisborne Harbour rather than Tatapouri because it was
closer.

Tom on the bow and Johnny checking out the bucket.

Tom and JB sre getting right into the busket.  They caught some sprats
and shrimp etc and put them in the bucket.

Driving home to Auckland, we stopped off at the Waioeka gorge.

Johnny enjoying the river.

Tom on the bank.
